Kasich snatches Boston Globe endorsement

The Boston Globe late Monday endorsed John Kasich for the Republican presidential nomination.

The news organization cast the Ohio governor as having a “pragmatic, fiscally responsible” record.

“New Hampshire Republicans can do their party a critical service on Feb. 9 by voting for an experienced political figure with a record of results, and thus dealing a blow to the divisive, demagogic candidates running on nativism and other political simplicities,” editors wrote in an editorial.

{mosads}Kasich has surged recently in New Hampshire, which holds its primary Feb. 9.

While he is well behind front-runner Donald Trump, he’s battling a slew of establishment candidates including New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who was endorsed Monday by the Boston Herald, for a strong second-place finish in the Granite State.

The Boston Globe suggested Kasich’s concern for “helping the poor” could benefit him in a general election, and in the primary as an alternative to Trump.

On Tuesday, Kasich also won the endorsement of the Concord Monitor in New Hampshire, which mentioned his experience in Congress and tenure overseeing an economic turnaround in Ohio.
