RNC rebukes Trump for McCain remarks
The Republican National Committee issued a strong rebuke of Donald Trump’s mocking of Sen. John McCain’s military service Saturday, saying his comments “have no place in our party or country.”
{mosads}The Republican presidential taunted McCain’s six years as a prisoner during the Vietnam War earlier Saturday.
“He was a war hero because he was captured,” Trump sarcastically told host Frank Luntz during the 2015 Family Leadership Summit. “I like people who weren’t captured.”
RNC Chief Strategist and Communications Director Sean Spicer released a statement hours later that read:
“Senator McCain is an American hero because he served his country and sacrificed more than most can imagine. Period. There is no place in our party or our country for comments that disparage those who have served honorably.”
The RNC joins several GOP presidential candidates, including former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), in rebuking Trump.
