Trump denies credentials to newspaper that called for him to end campaign
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is denying press credentials to an Iowa newspaper that called on Trump to drop out of the 2016 race.
The Des Moines Register says they were denied credentials to cover Trump’s event Saturday in Oskaloosa, Iowa, because the paper ran an a Tuesday editorial headlined “Trump should pull the plug on his bloviating side show.”
“We’re not issuing credentials to anyone from The Des Moines Register based on the editorial that they wrote earlier in the week,” Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s national campaign manager, reportedly told a Des Moines Register reporter.
{mosads}Lewandowski added that he expected the campaign to consider allowing the newspaper to cover events in the future.
Amalie Nash, the Register’s editor and vice president for audience engagement, released a statement noting that the paper’s editorials have no bearing on news coverage.
“We are disappointed that Mr. Trump’s campaign has taken the unusual step of excluding Register reporters from covering his campaign event in Iowa on Saturday because he was displeased with our editorial,” she said.
“We work hard to provide Iowans with coverage of all the candidates when they spend time in Iowa, and this is obviously impeding our ability to do so,” she added.”
In the Tuesday editorial, the Des Moines Register said Trump “has been more focused on promoting himself, and his brand, than in addressing the problems facing the nation.”
The editorial blasted Trump for mocking Sen. John McCain’s military service over the weekend.
“His comments were not merely offensive, they were disgraceful,” it read. “So much so, in fact, that they threaten to derail not just his campaign, but the manner in which we choose our nominees for president.”
“The best way Donald Trump can serve his country is by apologizing to McCain and terminating this ill-conceived campaign.”
Trump sarcastically said of McCain on Saturday, “He was a war hero because he was captured,” before adding, “I like people who weren’t captured.”
