Billionaire GOP donor to support Rubio
Billionaire investor Paul Singer will be raising money for Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-Fla.) presidential campaign, The New York Times reported Friday evening.
Singer sent a letter to other Republican donors Friday calling Rubio the only GOP candidate who can “navigate this complex primary process, and still be in a position to defeat” Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, according to the report.
{mosads}“He is accustomed to thinking about American foreign policy as a responsible policy maker,” Singer further wrote. “He is ready to be an informed and assertive decision-maker.”
Singer’s support caps a successful week for Rubio, who got the best of presidential rival former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush two days earlier.
Rubio shut down Bush after the former governor accused him of abandoning his Senate work for the campaign trail.
Rubio is in third place in the GOP race with 9.3 percent support, according to a RealClearPolitics average of national polls.
Singer is a longtime Republican donor who contributed to former President George W. Bush’s campaigns and to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a group dedicated to attacking John Kerry when he ran against Bush for president in 2004.
Singer is the founder of hedge fund Elliott Management Corporation. He rated 327th on 2015’s Forbes list of richest Americans.
