Clinton says she’s open to legalizing marijuana

Hillary Clinton said she didn’t smoke marijuana when she was young and has no future plans to do so, but that it “should be available under appropriate circumstances” for medicinal use.

{mosads}She said, however, that she doesn’t believe there’s enough information available to decide when those circumstances are.

“I think we need to be very clear about the benefits of marijuana use for medicinal purposes. I don’t think we’ve done enough research yet,” Clinton said during a town-hall style forum hosted by CNN on Tuesday.

She said “it should be available under appropriate circumstances, but I do think we need more research.”

With respect to recreational uses for marijuana, she said she wanted to see how such a move plays out in the states that have already done it: Colorado and Washington

“States are the laboratories of democracy,” Clinton said. “I want to wait and see what the evidence is.”

Clinton, widely considered to be gearing up for a 2016 presidential run, answered questions from a crowd convened by CNN as part of a media blitz she’s on to promote her new memoir, Hard Choices.

It wasn’t the first time a Clinton has been confronted with the question of pot.

Her husband, Bill, while running for president in 1992, said in an interview that he “experimented with marijuana a time or two, and didn’t like it. I didn’t inhale and I didn’t try it again.”

His wife, however, apparently didn’t join him in that experience — and won’t in the future.

“I didn’t do it when I was young, I’m not going to start now,” Hillary Clinton said on Tuesday.
