O’Malley hits Clinton for 9/11 remarks

Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley on Sunday accused fellow Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton of trying to “mask” her relationship with Wall Street by invoking the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

{mosads}At the second Democratic primary debate on Saturday night, O’Malley and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) attacked Clinton for the millions of dollars in campaign contributions she has received from the financial sector.

Clinton countered, saying her relationship with Wall Street was forged in the wreckage of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

“I represented New York on 9/11 when we were attacked,” she said at the debate. “Where were we attacked? We were attacked in downtown Manhattan where Wall Street is. I did spend a whole lot of time and effort helping them rebuild.”

But at the Central Iowa Democrats Fall Barbecue on Sunday, O’Malley said Clinton “sadly invoked 9/11 to try and mask that, but she doesn’t have to mask that.”

“It is what it is,” he added, according to Bloomberg Politics.

Former President Bill Clinton, who was also at the barbecue on Sunday, said his wife didn’t deserve to be attacked.

“It is a stretch. Those of us who were there know that,” he said, according to Bloomberg.

The Clinton campaign has said the comments were taken out of context.
