British prime minister condemns Trump’s Muslim remarks
Pushback to Donald Trump’s idea to ban most Muslims from entering the U.S. has gone global, with British Prime Minister David Cameron on Tuesday condemning the GOP presidential candidate.
Cameron “completely disagrees” with Trump’s remarks, which are “are divisive, unhelpful and quite simply wrong,” spokeswoman Helen Bower told reporters in London, according to Bloomberg.
{mosads}“The prime minister is very clear that as we look at how we tackle extremism and this poisonous ideology, politicians need to look at ways they can bring communities together and make clear that these terrorists are not representative of Islam,” the Cameron spokeswoman added.
Trump has faced near universal backlash for his idea for a “total and complete shutdown” on Muslims entering the U.S. in the wake of last week’s mass shooting in California, which was linked to terrorism.
The celebrity businessman made the announcement amid a push for a more aggressive response to Islamic terrorism a day after President Obama warned the public against engaging in Islamophobia.
Trump defended his remarks during a series of interviews on Tuesday as they continue to roil debate over terrorism and prompted strong criticism from Republicans and Democrats alike.
