Clinton targets Sanders on auto bailout

Hillary Clinton ripped Bernie Sanders for opposing legislation used to bail out the American auto industry in a dramatic moment in Sunday’s presidential debate in Flint, Mich.

“If everybody had voted the way he did, I believe the auto industry would have collapsed, taking 4 million jobs with it,” Clinton said during Thursday night’s Democratic debate in Flint, Mich.

{mosads}Clinton was talking about the 2008 bill setting up the Troubled Asset Relief Program, which was used by the government to give loans to banks and later to the auto industry.

“I voted to save the auto industry,” Clinton said in comments targeting voters in Michigan, the center of U.S. auto industry. “He voted against the money that ended up saving the auto industry. I think that is a pretty big difference.”

Sanders replied that Clinton had voted for the bailout to help her friends on Wall Street who had “destroyed this economy.”

“When billionaires on Wall Street destroyed this economy, they went to Congress and they said, ‘Oh please, we’ll be good boys, bail us out.’ You know what I said? I said let the billionaires themselves bail out Wall Street.”

Michigan’s Democratic primary election is Tuesday.
