Poll: In Clinton-Trump race, voters would decide based on dislike

If Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump face off in November, voters will be more motivated by dislike for the other side than happiness with their own candidate, a new poll says

{mosads}Nearly half of supporters for both presidential candidates say their primary reason would be to block the other party’s nominee, according to a Reuters/Ipsos released Thursday.

Among Trump supporters, 47 percent said that blocking Clinton would be their main reason for backing the presumptive Republican nominee.

Forty-three percent of Trump supporters said they would vote for him because of his political positions and 6 percent said liking his personality was the main factor.

It’s the same on the other side, where 46 percent of Clinton supporters said they would mainly be motivated to block Trump. Forty percent said were motivated by her positions and 11 percent cited liking her personally.

Trump became the presumptive GOP nominee this week, and Clinton remains the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The poll has a margin of error of 5.3 points for the 469 Trump supporters surveyed, and a margin of error of 4.7 points for the 599 Clinton supporters.
