Donald Trump on Monday said the Orlando nightclub attack wouldn’t have been as bad if the clubgoers had been armed.
“If you had some guns in that club the night that this took place, if you had guns on the other side, you wouldn’t have had the tragedy that you had,” the presumptive GOP presidential nominee said Monday on CNN.
{mosads}”If people in that room had guns, with the bullets flying in the opposite direction right at him, right at his head, you wouldn’t have had the same tragedy that you ended up having.”
Trump said people don’t even yet know how bad the tragedy is, because the number of casualties will likely grow.
“I hear the injured are so greatly injured,” he said.
“But if you had guns in that room, even if you had a number of people having it strapped to your ankle or strapped to their waste, where bullets could have flown in the other direction right at him, you wouldn’t have had the same kind of a tragedy.”
The nightclub attack early Sunday morning left 50 people dead, including the shooter, and many more injured, making it the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
The shooting sparked some lawmakers to call for Congress to pass new gun control laws.
Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton on Sunday called for gun control, saying the U.S. needs to keep guns “like the ones used last night” out of the hands of terrorists and criminals.
“This is the deadliest mass shooting in the history of the United States, and it reminds us once more that weapons of war have no place on our streets,” Clinton said.
Trump on CNN said the country needs to stop taking in Syrian refugees and slammed the current leadership for being “weak.” He said this is a case for “surveillance” and “intelligence gathering.”
