Clinton backs requiring women to register for draft

Hillary Clinton says she supports a measure requiring women to register for the draft, while maintaining that the American military should remain a volunteer force.

“I do support that,” she said to The Huffington Post about a measure in the Senate that would require women to register.

{mosads}“I am on record as supporting the all-volunteer military, which I think at this time does serve our country well…I am very committed to supporting and really lifting up the men and women in uniform and their families.”

The draft measure was part of a larger defense policy bill which passed the Senate on Wednesday.

The push to treat women the same as men in signing up for the draft comes amid major changes in the military to level the playing field.

President Obama decided late last year to allow women to serve in all combat roles, and in March appointed the first female combat commander to U.S. Northern Command.

Clinton will almost certainly become the first female nominee to a major party in American history and has made gender equality a main plank of her campaign.
