Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton (R) aimed on Tuesday to tamp down speculation that he might take the No. 2 spot in a hypothetical Trump administration, saying that he’s “not being vetted” for vice president.
“They have not [reached out.] I am not being vetted for that position,” Cotton told KARN, a Little Rock radio station. “I have no reason to believe that I would be either. I’ve got my hands full representing Arkansas in the Senate, and with my little son at home.”
{mosads}Cotton, who joined the Senate in 2015 after serving two years in the House, is increasingly gaining attention as a possibility to share the Republican ticket with presumptive nominee Donald Trump.
Trump has suggested he wants a VP pick who would be comfortable with the inner workings of Congress, raising questions about if he would select a current lawmaker.
Cotton’s comments come after Trump said the Senate hawk and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie were “high on the list for something at least.”
“I’ve gotten very good, you know, very good statements from Sen. Cotton, whose parents I know and met. I think that he is a very talented guy,” he told Hugh Hewitt. “He’s also a very popular, he’s a very popular person.”
Trump is expected to announce his VP pick at the party convention in Cleveland next month and said last week that he’s open to rolling out Cabinet-level picks before the election in November.
