Report: Trump wants ex-Goldman Sachs partner to head Treasury

Donald Trump is reportedly planning to nominate Steve Mnuchin, his campaign’s finance chairman, for Treasury secretary if he wins the White House in November.

Anthony Scaramucci, a major fundraiser for the Trump campaign, told Fortune on Tuesday that the presumptive GOP nominee announced his intentions to a group of prospective donors.

{mosads}Trump tapped Mnuchin in early May to lead the campaign’s fundraising operation. The move raised eyebrows among Republican donors and fundraising operatives, many of whom had never heard of him.

A spokeswoman for the campaign did not immediately respond when asked to confirm the report.

At first glance, Mnuchin, a former partner at Goldman Sachs, seems like an odd choice for a Republican candidate. According to federal campaign finance records, Mnuchin has donated thousands to Democratic candidates and committees over the years, including $7,400 to Hillary Clinton’s Senate bids and her 2008 presidential campaign.

While Mnuchin’s Wall Street bona fides may put some high-profile donors at ease, putting him in charge of the Treasury may complicate Trump’s populist message. He frequently refers to Clinton, his Democratic opponent, as a puppet of special interests like the financial industry.
