Clinton corrects comments on corporations

Hillary Clinton on Monday corrected a fumbled response she’d made at an event last week on jobs, saying she had “shorthanded” the remark.

In the Friday comment at a political rally in Massachusetts, Clinton said, “Don’t let anybody tell you that, you know, it’s corporations and businesses that create jobs.”

{mosads}On Monday, after days of criticism by conservative websites, Clinton acknowledged she’d misspoke.

“I short-handed this point the other day, so let me be absolutely clear about what I’ve been saying for a couple of decades,” she said during a campaign stop for Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.), BuzzFeed reports.

“Our economy grows when businesses and entrepreneurs create good-paying jobs here in America and workers and families are empowered to build from the bottom up and the middle out,” Clinton said. “Not when we hand out tax breaks for corporations that outsource jobs or stash their profits overseas.”

Clinton made the original comment Friday as she was heading into a section of her speech criticizing “trickle-down economics.”

She had praised Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) earlier in the speech. Warren is a potential presidential rival known for her tough rhetoric against Wall Street.

Clinton on Monday praised businesses that are “responsible corporate citizens.”

“They’re paying workers a living wage instead of a poverty wage,” she said. “They are investing in communities instead of hollowing them out. They are empowering workers instead of preventing them from organizing and joining unions to represent them.”
