One World Trade Center lights up in colors of French flag

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo late Friday directed the One World Trade Center’s spire to light up in blue, white and red in solidarity with the French following multiple attacks in Paris.

Photos emerged on social media of the 408-foot spire lighting up in the colors of the U.S. ally, hours after President Obama vowed support to France in the wake of the attacks.

{mosads}”Today, and in the days ahead, New York will light One World Trade Center in blue, white and red as we stand in solemn solidarity with the people of France, just as they have done for us in our own times of tragedy,” Cuomo said in a statement released by his office.

“We join them in mourning those who were killed, and in praying for those who were injured or lost loved ones. And we continue to stand side by side with them in our commitment to a free and peaceful world,” Cuomo added.

Friday’s apparently coordinated shootings and explosions at several sites around France, which were quickly condemned as terrorism by U.S. and French leaders, were viewed as among the worst terrorist attacks on a western city since the Sept. 11, 2001, downing of the World Trade Center buildings.

“This is a heartbreaking situation, and obviously those of us here in the United States know what it’s like, we’ve gone through these kind of episodes ourselves,” Obama said earlier Friday.
