Trump’s name temporarily removed from Dubai golf course
Donald Trump’s name was temporarily removed from a luxury golf course project in Dubai in the wake of public outcry over the GOP presidential candidate’s proposal to ban Muslims from the U.S.
Reuters reported Thursday that the Dubai real estate partner building the multi-billion-dollar project had removed Trump’s name and likeness from a billboard outside the development.
Gold letters that included Trump’s name on a stone wall at the AKOYA by DAMAC project entrance were also removed, according to a photographer for the news outlet.
Hours later, a source familiar with the situation provided The Hill a photo showing the signage back up, with “Trump International Golf Club” spelled out in gold letters.
A spokesman for DAMAC Properties had said in a statement published by CNN on Wednesday that the developer wanted to keep business and politics separate.
“We would like to stress that our agreement is with the Trump Organization as one of the premium golf course operators in the world and as such we would not comment further on Mr. Trump’s personal or political agenda, nor comment on the internal American political debate scene,” Niall McLoughlin, a senior vice president at Damac Properties, said in the statement.
The spokesman declined to comment to Reuters on Thursday on why Trump’s name and image were removed from the billboard, along with that of his daughter, Ivanka Trump.
Trump has stood by his proposal this week to temporarily bar Muslim foreign nationals from entering the U.S. amid fears of international terrorism, despite an onslaught of criticism.
Leaders in the U.S., United Kingdom and France have condemned Trump, who has also postponed a trip to Israel after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced his Muslim proposal.
