Mexican president: We caught ‘El Chapo’
Mexican drug lord Joaquin Guzman Loera, known as “El Chapo,” has been captured, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said Friday on Twitter.
{mosads}“Mission accomplished: We have him. I want to inform the Mexicans that Joaquin Guzman Lorea has been detained,” Nieto wrote in Spanish.
He congratulated security authorities in his Cabinet for the arrest in a follow-up tweet.
No further details about the capture have been released.
Guzman escaped from prison in July of last year when he tunneled his way out of a maximum security prison near Mexico City.
Days after he escaped, Guzman taunted authorities in pictures showing him sipping beer from his private plane. There has been a manhunt for him since.
The kingpin is worth an estimated $1 billion.
