Trump brushes off David Duke support
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Friday disavowed a former Ku Klux Klan leader’s support.
“I didn’t even know he endorsed me,” Trump said while unveiling an endorsement from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, when asked about former KKK grand wizard David Duke’s support.
{mosads}”David Duke endorsed me? OK, alright. I disavow, OK?” Trump said, seeking to quickly move on to another question.
The former KKK leader earlier this week praised Trump’s recent wins in South Carolina and Nevada and encouraged his followers to throw their support behind the businessman.
Duke argued that voting for Trump’s rivals is “really treason to your heritage.”
“I’m not saying I endorse everything about Trump, in fact I haven’t formally endorsed him. But I do support his candidacy, and I support voting for him as a strategic action. I hope he does everything we hope he will do,” Duke said.
Duke’s support for Trump was hammered Friday on the cover of the New York Daily News.
Trump is rolling out the Christie endorsement a day after being targeted repeatedly by rivals Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz at a GOP presidential debate. The candidates are seeking to shore up support with days left until Super Tuesday next week.
