DeRay Mckesson, activists won’t face charges for La. protest

Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson and about 100 protesters who were arrested Baton Rouge last week will not face criminal charges for demonstrating in the wake of the police-involved shooting of Alton Sterling, according to Buzzfeed.

{mosads}“These particular cases only involve facts where the person arrested failed to comply with an officer’s direction to leave the roadway or public passage,” District Attorney Hillar C. Moore said in a statement.

“While all citizens have the right to assemble and protest, they do not have the right to block streets and impede the flow of traffic.”

About 185 people were arrested in the protests.

Mckesson filmed part of his arrest while broadcasting the demonstration on Periscope. Police had told protesters to stay off the road, but Mckesson and others argued that there was no sidewalk on which they could safely walk.
