Gingrich: Trump has ‘gotten the messages’
Former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) on Sunday said Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is turning his campaign around ahead of the general election.
{mosads}”I think that, first of all, if you look at the last few days, I think he’s gotten the messages,” Gingrich said on “Fox News Sunday.”
Trump has faced over a week of scathing attacks stemming from several controversies.
Trump criticized the family of Capt. Humayun Khan, a U.S. soldier killed in 2004 in Iraq. He then declined to endorse Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for reelection.
On Friday, though, Trump endorsed reversed course and backed both men.
Gingrich, who was critical last week of some of Trump’s comments, noted recent endorsements of Trump and said the nominee is now taking steps to get his campaign back on message.
“It’s very tricky if you’ve never run for public office,” he said, “to jump from being a businessman to being one of the two leaders fighting for the presidency, and he’s made some mistakes.”
He then slammed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, saying she made the “biggest mistake” last week when she claimed FBI Director James Comey said her statements about her private email server were truthful — a statement fact-checkers found to be false.
“It’s one thing to lie. It’s another thing to lie about lying, and then Friday, she gave us the perfect explanation, her brain apparently short-circuited,” Gingrich said.
“So I’ll take the week. I think she managed to trump Trump in terms of a mistake.”
