Harvey death toll rises to eight

The death toll in the wake of Hurricane Harvey has risen to at least eight people, The Washington Post reported Monday.

Six family members — four children under the age of 16, as well as their great-grandparents — drowned in a van as they tried to escape rising floodwaters in Harris County, near Houston. Their great-uncle managed to escape, KHOU-TV reported.

One person was also killed in Rockport, not far from where the storm first made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane, and another in La Marque, near Gavelston.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) activated the state’s entire National Guard in response to the rising floodwaters, which officials warned are expected to continue rising in the coming days.

President Trump is set to visit Texas to view the battered region on Tuesday.
