Shkreli ordered to await sentencing in jail

A federal judge ordered former drug company CEO Martin Shkreli to jail on Wednesday to await sentencing on charges of defrauding investors, The New York Daily News reported.

Judge Kiyo Matsumoto revoked Shkreli’s $5 million bond after he offered in a Facebook post to pay $5,000 to anyone who obtained a sample of former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s hair. 

Shkreli apologized for the social media post in a letter filed with the court on Monday. The letter was addressed to Matsumoto.

“I wanted to personally apologize to this Court and my lawyers for the aggravation that my recent postings have caused,” he wrote. 

“I understand now, that some may have read my comments about Mrs. Clinton as threatening, when that was never my intention when making those comments. I used poor judgment but never intended to cause alarm or promote any act of violence whatsoever.”

Shkreli’s attorney argued that the self-proclaimed “Pharma Bro’s” Facebook followers understood that the offer was posted in jest, and that it almost certainly wouldn’t have been taken seriously, according to The New York Daily News.

Matsumoto ultimately dismissed that argument.
