Brother of Stephon Clark shuts down meeting on police shooting

The brother of an unarmed black man who was shot and killed by police temporarily shut down a city council meeting about the shooting.

Stevante Clark, whose brother Stephon Clark was shot and killed last week by police, walked into the Sacramento, Calif., City Council meeting Tuesday night chanting his late brother’s name.

He led a group of protesters into the meeting chambers in city hall, all chanting Stephon Clark’s name.

Stephon Clark, 22, was shot and killed by police in his grandmother’s backyard in Sacramento. Officers were responding to a report of a suspect breaking car windows and shot Clark 20 times, believing he had a weapon. They only found a cell phone on him.

“The mayor and the city of Sacramento has failed all of you,” Stevante Clark told the crowd at the meeting.

The interruption caused the meeting to temporarily shut down.

Hundreds of protesters also gathered at the meeting, chanting and holding signs.

California’s attorney general announced earlier Tuesday that his office would run an independent investigation into the shooting.

Police Chief Daniel Hahn said he had asked for the independent investigation, calling the shooting a “tragedy that no one wants to see or experience.”
