Senator wants a woman on $20 bill
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) is throwing her support behind a campaign to put a woman’s image on the $20 bill.
The New Hampshire Democrat introduced legislation this week that would direct the Treasury Department to create a panel that would make a recommendation on who should be featured.
{mosads}The New Hampshire Democrat suggested that a more prominent place for women on U.S. currency is “long overdue.”
“Our paper currency is an important part of our everyday lives and reflects our values, traditions and history as Americans,” Shaheen said in a statement. “It’s long overdue for that reflection to include the contributions of women.”
Shaheen also backed the “Women on 20s” campaign, which launched an online petition to gather support for featuring a woman on the $20 bill. The group is also asking supporters to vote on who should be featured. The ballot, which has attracted more than 256,000 votes, has been narrowed down to four contenders: Eleanor Roosevelt, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks and Cherokee Nation Chief Wilma Mankiller.
Shaheen told The Associated Press that her choices for who to include on the $20 bill include Tubman, Roosevelt, former first lady Abigail Adams and Frances Perkins, who was the first women appointed to a president’s Cabinet.
