GOP senator: More Iran votes possible

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said the Senate could take additional votes on the Iran nuclear deal if Democrats block a resolution of disapproval on Thursday.

“We’re still working on what they will be, but there’s going to be a number of additional votes next week,” he said in response to a question about whether the Senate could take up a resolution approving the agreement.

The House is planning such a vote this week in response to arguments from conservatives. The idea behind the vote is to put Democrats on the record as supporting the deal.

{mosads}The Senate on Thursday is set to take a procedural vote on a resolution to reject the deal.

Clearing that hurdle requires 60 votes. Democrats are expected to have the 41 votes to block it, though Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said Wednesday that he was still trying lock down enough votes to support a potential filibuster, telling reporters that he still had a few “loose ends.”

Congress has until Sept. 17 to pass legislation on the international accord, which would lift sanctions on Iran in exchange for limits on its nuclear program.
