De Niro: ‘Vote for Hillary’ in order ‘to keep a comedy from turning into a tragedy’

Robert De Niro says the country has “the opportunity to keep a comedy from turning into a tragedy,” by voting for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton on Tuesday.

{mosads}Accepting an honor onstage Sunday at the Hollywood Film Awards, the “Godfather” actor called the 2016 race a “frightening election,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“The shadow of politics is hanging over us whether we like it or not. It’s hard for me to think about anything else,” De Niro said.

“Let me just lay it out right here,” De Niro continued, “We have the opportunity to keep a comedy from turning into a tragedy. Vote for Hillary, Tuesday.”

De Niro has been an outspoken critic of Donald Trump, calling the GOP presidential nominee everything from a “punk” to a “bullshit artist” whom he’d “like to punch” in the face.

The 73-year-old Academy Award winner wasn’t the only pro-Clinton entertainer to take the stage. CBS “Late Late Show’s” James Corden, who hosted the ceremony in California, quipped to the crowd during his opening remarks, “This year they brought back ‘Star Wars’ with a female lead. They rebooted ‘Ghostbusters’ with a female cast. And I pray to God they reboot the Clinton presidency with a female lead.”
