White House to host offline ‘Holiday social’ for Pinterest fans

{mosads}The White House officially joined the social network on Saturday, and held a one-day contest for new followers to enter a contest to visit the White House for a “Holiday Social” on Monday, Dec. 17.

“Pinners will be invited to check out the décor, meet with the people that helped transform the White House for the holidays, join us for a craft project — and share it all with the Pinterest community” at the social, according to Director of Online Engagement Kori Schulman on the official White House blog.

The reelection campaign set up Pinterest pages for both President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama, but both have been dormant since last month. The White House is now running an official Pinterest page for the first time under the name WhiteHouse44 on the site.

Pinterest has become wildly popular for fans of crafts and cooking to share photos of results that typically link to how-to tips. The majority of users on the site are female. So far, the White House has more than 6,000 followers on the new page.

The White House will officially begin “pinning” to its virtual pinboard on Dec. 17, to coincide with the offline craft event.

“On Pinterest, the White House will share pins and boards that range from inspiring images and quotes to infographics that help explain key issues to details about the life inside the White House,” Schulman wrote.

So far, the White House has only “pinned” the invitation to the offline event, but Schulman is also asking for suggestions from users on what they’d like to see the White House share. Users can offer suggestions by commenting on the invitation here.
