Robert Work sworn in as Hagel’s deputy

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Monday swore in Robert Work to be his new deputy.

Work replaces Christine Fox, who served in an acting capacity since late last year when Ashton Carter stepped down, to become the 32nd deputy defense secretary.

“I am humbled by the confidence President Obama and Secretary Hagel have placed in me and pledge to do everything possible to help maintain America’s military edge,” Work said in a statement released by the Defense Department.

He praised Fox and Carter saying, “both distinguished themselves while serving as deputy secretary and have left a legacy of excellence.”

Work, a retired Marine Corps colonel and former Navy undersecretary, was confirmed by the Senate on April 30, roughly three months after receiving the nomination.
