Five other U.S. service members who were aboard the aircraft have been rescued, Central Command said. An investigation has been initiated.
“When the incident took place the helicopter was not very high above the water,” CENTCOM spokesman Colonel John Thomas told Reuters.
The crash took place during a scheduled training mission, while U.S. forces have been conducting strikes against the al Qaeda terrorist group in the region.
