Manhattan’s top federal prosecutor staying on under Trump

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara is agreeing to remain in his position under a Donald Trump administration.

{mosads}Bharara, known for his prosecutions of Wall Street figures, met with the president-elect on Wednesday at Trump Tower in New York.

He told reporters following the meeting that Trump wanted to meet with him with him “presumably because he’s a New Yorker and is aware of the great work that our office has done over the past seven years,” according to pool reports.

Bharara said Trump wanted to discuss whether he’d be willing to stay on his current position as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.

“We had a good meeting,” he told reporters. “I agreed to stay on.”

He added that he has already spoken with Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), Trump’s nominee to serve as attorney general.

“He also asked that I stay on,” Bharara said. “And so I expect that I will be continuing to work at the Southern District.”

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Trump called him last week to ask what he thought about Bharara staying in his role as a top U.S. attorney. 

“I told him I thought Preet was great, and I would be all for keeping him on the job and fully support it,” Schumer said. 

“I am glad they met and am glad Preet is staying on. He’s been one of the best U.S attorneys New York has ever seen.”
