Sanders: There are some opportunities to work with Trump

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) says he sees some opportunities to work with President-elect Donald Trump and his administration.

“I don’t think it makes sense to say, ‘No, we’re not going to work in any way, in any form, with the Trump administration,’ ” Sanders said Thursday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“Trump has talked appropriately about a collapsing infrastructure on roads, bridges and water systems.”

Sanders said he would be open to working with the president-elect on rebuilding the country’s infrastructure and creating millions of jobs.

{mosads}”And doing it in a way that doesn’t privatize our infrastructure or give tax breaks to the billionaires,” Sanders said. “Yes, let’s work together.”

Sanders also brought up the fact that Trump has talked about the country’s failed trade policy.

“If he is prepared to work with us on a trade policy which works for the American worker and not just the CEO of large, multinational corporations, let’s work together on those areas,” Sanders said.

But he also listed areas where he won’t compromise with the Trump administration.

“There cannot be any compromise on bigotry. Trump’s campaign has tried to divide us up. There can be no compromise there,” he said.

“There can be no compromise in my view on protecting American democracy, working against voter suppression that many Republican governors are trying to bring about.”

Sanders said there can be no compromise on the issue climate change.

“Bringing forward a nominee for the EPA, Mr. Pruitt, who does not believe in environmental protection, is crazy, it is insane,” Sanders said, referring to Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt, Trump’s pick to head the Environmental Protection Agency.

“Climate change is real and it’s one of the great threats to our planet. We have to transform our energy system.”

Sanders, a former Democratic presidential candidate, frequently criticized Trump throughout the presidential campaign.

Challenged to compliment the president-elect during a CNN interview earlier this week, the Vermont senator talked about Trump’s “extraordinary accomplishment” in taking on the Republican, Democratic and media establishments and winning the presidency.

“So I give Donald Trump his due,” Sanders said.
