Trump: ‘We’re not here to help ourselves’

Speaking in the White House East Room Sunday afternoon, President Donald Trump told the assembled senior staff, “You’re very important.”

Ahead of the swearing-in administered by Vice President Mike Pence, Trump said, “We’re going to do some great things over the next eight years,” to applause, adding, “As a nation and a country, we’re going to come out way ahead.”

“This is not about party. This is not about ideology. This is about country,” he continued. “It’s about serving the American people.”

About 30 assistants to the president who were being sworn in were gathered, according to the pool report, including Reince Priebus, Stephen Bannon, Kellyanne Conway and Jared Kushner in the first row. Seated in the second row were Omarosa Manigault, Sean Spicer, Hope Hicks, Stephen Miller, Katie Walsh and Michael Flynn.

“So many people are dependent on us,” he said, such as veterans, the unemployed, military service members, victims of crime and young people.

“We will face challenges. But with faith in each other and faith in God we will get the job done. We will prove worthy of this moment in history. It may very well be a great moment in history.”
