Poll: Most say race relations worse under Trump

A majority of voters says race relations have gotten worse under President Trump, according to a new Politico/Morning Consult poll.

Fifty-five percent of voters surveyed told pollsters race relations have worsened since Trump came into office last year, compared to 16 percent who said they are better now and 18 percent who said they have stayed the same. 

The poll found a wide partisan gap on the issue, with 82 percent of self-identified Democrats responding that relations have gotten worse while only 25 percent of Republicans said the same.

Thirty-five percent of Republicans polled said race relations have improved under Trump, compared to only 4 percent of Democrats in the survey. Twenty-nine percent of Republicans polled said they have stayed the same, while 9 percent of Democrats in the sample agreed. 

The poll also found racial differences in responses: 51 percent of white voters said relations are worse, while 79 percent of African-Americans and 60 percent of Hispanics said the same. 

The poll comes days before a planned “Unite the Right 2” rally in Washington, D.C., marking the one-year anniversary of the deadly Charlottesville, Va., protests.  Trump drew ire last year for his comment that “both sides” were to blame for the violence in Virginia. 

The Politico/Morning Consult poll surveyed 1,994 registered voters between Aug. 2-6, with a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
