Trump misstates approval rating in latest poll

President Trump touted an incorrect number for his most recent approval rating in a Sunday night tweet.

“Over 90% approval rating for your all time favorite (I hope) President within the Republican Party and 52% overall,” Trump tweeted. “This despite all of the made up stories by the Fake News Media trying endlessly to make me look as bad and evil as possible. Look at the real villains please!”

A poll released Sunday by The Wall Street Journal and NBC News found that Trump has a 44 percent approval rating.

{mosads}The poll found that 52 percent of registered voters disapproved of his performance. This came after his former attorney Michael Cohen pleaded guilty to bank fraud, tax fraud and campaign finance violations on Tuesday.

The Hill has reached out to the White House for clarification regarding Trump’s tweet.

The same poll did find that Trump has a 90 percent approval rating among Republicans, compared to a 10 percent approval rating from Democrats.

Before Cohen’s plea deal, the Journal–NBC poll found that Trump had a 46 percent approval rating and 51 percent disapproval rating.

They then released a follow-up poll after news broke of Cohen’s plea and after Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, was convicted on fraud charges. The president’s job approval rating appeared unmoved by the news.

The poll also found that a majority of voters — 56 percent — say that Trump had not been honest about special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election, including whether the Trump campaign was involved in those efforts.

The margin of error for the initial poll was 3.27 percentage points and the the follow up poll had a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
