Poll: Dems have biggest generic House ballot lead since 2006

Democrats have a double-digit lead over Republicans on a generic midterm House ballot, according to a new poll.

A Washington Post/ABC News poll released early Monday finds 51 percent of registered voters say they would support a Democratic House candidate in their congressional district if the election was being held today.

Another 39 percent of respondents say they would support the Republican candidate over a Democrat.

{mosads}The 12-point advantage represents the largest since 2006, according to the poll.

Democrats hold a large lead among women voters, 57 to 31 percent. Independent voters also favor the Democratic candidate, 50 to 34 percent.

The poll was conducted from Jan. 15-18 among 1,005 adults, including 846 registered voters. The margin of error is 3.5 percent. 

A CNN poll released Sunday found that the Democratic lead going into the November midterm election had narrowed to just 5 points.
