Senior Dem on leadership shake-up: ‘All of us have got to go’ if GOP holds House

Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said in an interview published Sunday that Democratic leadership in the House should step down if the party falls short of reclaiming the lower chamber in November’s midterm elections. 

“If we’re still in the minority,” Clyburn told Politico, “all of us have got to go.” 

{mosads}Clyburn’s comments come as speculation swirls around the possibility of a Democratic leadership overhaul in the House even if the party wins a majority. 

An increasing number of young Democrats appear frustrated with the veteran leadership team of Clyburn, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (Md.), who have failed to win the House majority four times. 

“I say all the time that we need to have young people and we need to have older people. We need to have strength and we need to have experience,” Clyburn told CNN, referring to Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio). 

Ryan, who tried and failed to challenge Pelosi for her leadership position in 2016, appeared at Clyburn’s fish fry last week. 

Ryan has said he will discuss a platform Democrats can run on in the future. 

“I’m going to try to communicate to everyone exactly how fierce of a global competition we’re in economically, militarily, and really culturally. Not just here in the U.S. but around the world,” he told CNN. “Democrats need to have an agenda that Americans will trust us to lead in this competition. That means that we need everybody in the country healthy, skilled and ready to compete.”
