Trump robocall attacks Dem in Georgia special election

President Trump recorded a robocall Monday calling on voters to help defeat Jon Ossoff, a Democratic candidate running for Georgia’s 6th Congressional District, saying he will “raise your taxes, destroy your healthcare, and flood our country with illegal immigrants.”

In Trump’s automated call about Tuesday’s special election in Georgia, he urges voters to fight against the “Washington Democrats” such as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to win the seat that Tom Price recently vacated to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.

“Liberal democrats from outside of Georgia are spending millions and millions of dollars trying to take your Republican congressional seat away from you. Don’t let them do it,” Trump said in the phone call.

Trump’s message echoed a House GOP super PAC attack ad that had been claiming Ossoff served as Pelosi’s “yes man.”

{mosads}“Only you can stop the super liberal Democrats and Nancy Pelosi’s group, and in particular Jon Ossoff. If you don’t vote tomorrow, Ossoff will raise your taxes, destroy your healthcare, and flood our country with illegal immigrants,” he continued. 

Trump did not name a specific Republican candidate, but he urged qualifying voters to vote “Republican,” which could include Karen Handel, Bob Gray, Dan Moody or Judson Hill.

“That way we can cut spending and get our economy back on track, and keep America safe. It is already happening. There’s only one way to stop the Washington liberals from taking your congressional seat, and your money, and your safety. And that’s by voting Republican for Congress tomorrow,” the president said. 

Ossoff is leading the polls with about 43 percent to Handel’s 17 percent, according to the Huffington Post poll last updated on Saturday. 

If no candidate receives a 50 percent majority, the election will become a runoff between the two highest finishers, likely to be Ossoff and Handel.

Trump similarly recorded an phone call voicing support for the GOP candidate Ron Estes, who narrowly won a special election in Kansas last week by 6 percentage points. Estes replaced Mike Pompeo after Trump tapped him to head the CIA. 

The Republican National Committee, which sponsored the call, declined to comment.
