Police name suspect in Manchester bombing

Manchester police on Tuesday said the person suspected of detonating an improvised explosive device on Monday evening is a 22-year-old man named Salman Abedi.

 

The New York Times reported that Abedi was born in the United Kingdom, and The Telegraph reported that his Libyan parents emigrated to London before settling in Manchester.

“I can confirm that the man suspected of carrying out last night’s atrocity has been named as 22-year-old Salman Abedi,” Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said in a statement. “However, he has not yet been formally identified and I wouldn’t wish, therefore, to comment further.”

“The priority remains to establish whether he was acting alone or as part of a network.”

“We understand that feelings are very raw right now and people are bound to be looking for answers,” he added. “However, now, more than ever, it is vital that our diverse communities in Greater Manchester stand together and do not tolerate hate.

{mosads}The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) on Tuesday claimed responsibility for the attack at a concert arena, which occurred around the conclusion of an Ariana Grande concert.

A 23-year-old man was arrested in connection with the deadly bombing.

“With regards to last night’s incident at the Manchester arena, we can confirm we have arrested a 23-year-old man in South Manchester,” Greater Manchester Police tweeted Tuesday. 

Police said 22 people died in the attack.
