Conservative columnist: I want Democrats to take over Congress

Conservative columnist Max Boot said he wants Democrats to retake control of both chambers of Congress in November’s midterm elections.

Boot, a frequent critic of President Trump, wrote in The Washington Post on Wednesday that he was joining other prominent conservatives who have pledged to vote against the party.

{mosads}The GOP is now a “white-nationalist party with a conservative fringe,” Boot wrote.

“If you’re part of that fringe, what should you do?” he asked. 

Boot said he is rooting for a Democratic takeover in both the House and Senate.

“Like postwar Germany and Japan, the Republican Party must be destroyed before it can be rebuilt,” Boot wrote.

He is convinced he made the right decision, noting how Trump’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy had previously separated more than 2,000 migrant children from their parents after illegally crossing the border.

“While two-thirds of Americans disapproved of this state-sanctioned child abuse, forcing the president to back down, a majority of Republicans approved,” Boot wrote.

“The entire Republican platform can now be reduced to three words: whatever Trump says,” he added.

He is joined by GOP strategist Steve Schmidt and former Post columnist George F. Will in supporting Democrats.

“29 years and nine months ago I registered to vote and became a member of The Republican Party which was founded in 1854 to oppose slavery and stand for the dignity of human life,” Schmidt tweeted last month.

“Today I renounce my membership in the Republican Party. It is fully the party of Trump,” he added. 

Will urged Republicans last month to vote blue in November.
