Top Dem: Kushner reports a ‘rumor at this point’

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) on Sunday said he expects the special counsel named to investigate any Russian involvement in the 2016 election will get to the bottom of recent reports related to White House senior adviser Jared Kushner.

“The bottom line of course is we now have a special counsel in Bob Mueller. I have the highest level of confidence in him, and I hope that he will follow all the evidence, all the leads and all the suggestions and I’m sure he will,” Durbin, the Senate Democratic whip, said on “Fox News Sunday.”

“This is a rumor at this point and whether it is something that should be followed up on, I’ll trust Bob Mueller’s judgment.”

{mosads}The Washington Post reported on Friday that Kushner in December sought to establish a backchannel line of communication during a meeting with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. That channel was never set up.

The FBI is looking at meetings that Kushner fielded with Kislyak and Russian banking executive Sergey Gorkov in December as part of the investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

The Justice Department earlier this month appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate Russia’s involvement in the U.S. election.

When asked about the recent Kushner reports, Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) said on the same show that voters at home and across the country are more concerned with their “climbing healthcare premiums” and better jobs.

“This will play out,” he said. “We will know eventually.”
