NY lawmaker wants to rename Trump State Park after Charlottesville victim
A New York state lawmaker is pushing to change the name of a park named for President Trump to honor the woman who died last month in the violence in Charlottesville, Va.
Assembly Member Nily Rozic (D) plans to introduce a bill to rename the Donald J. Trump State Park to “Heather D. Heyer State Park,” BuzzFeed News reported.
“The renaming would acknowledge that its current designation does not reflect the goals of uplifting and unifying New Yorkers,” said Rozic, who hails from Trump’s native Queens.
{mosads}Heyer died last month when a car rammed into a crowd of people protesting against a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville.
Trump faced backlash after the deadly violence for saying there was blame on “both sides” and that some “very fine people” were among the white nationalists.
Rozic said Heyer’s life was “taken away by white supremacists who have been emboldened ever since President Trump took office.”
“In New York, we continue standing by one another and calling out those who seek to divide us,” she said, according to BuzzFeed.
“This activism is not new — it is embedded in our state’s history and re-naming Donald J. Trump State Park would serve as a reminder of the transformative power it holds to carry us forward.”
A New York assembly petition calling for the park’s name to be changed to Heyer’s is circulating online.
The petition says renaming the park would both honor Heyer and her activism and “serve as a reminder of how important it is for us to denounce those who seek to divide us.”
