Florida students stage walkout, march toward site of deadly mass shooting
Hundreds of students from a Florida high school just miles from the site of a deadly mass shooting last week staged a walkout on Tuesday.
The students from West Boca Raton High School walked out of class and are marching toward Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., where a gunman killed 17 people, the Miami Herald reported.
Authorities from Palm Beach and Broward counties are following the students to make sure they are safe, a spokesman told the Miami Herald.
West Boca Raton High School is about seven miles from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
{mosads}The walkout is an attempt to show solidarity with the students who survived the massacre and is a call to action, CBS News reported.
High school students in Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood, Fla., also walked out on Tuesday, and students in Hialeah, Fla., are planning a walkout Wednesday, according to the Herald.
Since the shooting, students have become vocal advocates for gun control, calling for lawmakers to take action to prevent a future tragedy.
Students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School are planning to head to the Florida state Capitol this week to demand action from lawmakers.
Students are also planning a march later this year in Washington, D.C., to protest gun violence.
