Senate panel to hold hearing next week for Trump IRS nominee

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on Friday announced that the panel will hold a hearing next week on President Trump’s nominee to lead the IRS.

The hearing to consider Chuck Rettig’s nomination to be IRS commissioner is scheduled for June 28.

If confirmed, Rettig will be tasked with overseeing the implementation of the new GOP tax-cut law Trump signed last year and will watch over the first tax-filing season under the new code.

He would also oversee an agency that is facing a number of technology and cybersecurity challenges.

The process of getting Trump’s permanent IRS team in place has taken a considerable amount of time.

Next week’s hearing will take place more than four months after Trump nominated Rettig, a Beverly Hills tax attorney who has served as chair of the IRS Advisory Council. And it comes more than six months after the end of the term of the previous IRS commissioner, John Koskinen.

The Senate Finance Committee also has yet to announce a hearing for Trump’s nominee to be IRS chief counsel — the only other position at the agency that requires Senate confirmation.

Under federal law, the terms of IRS commissioners are set in scheduled, five-year increments. If confirmed, Rettig would serve the remainder of the five-year term that ends in November 2022.
