Canadian PM: ‘We will not be intimidated’

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper looked to calm fears and reaffirm his nation’s commitment to the U.S.-led campaign against Islamic militants, after a masked gunman killed a Canadian soldier guarding a war memorial in Ottawa.

{mosads}”We will not be intimidated. Canada will never be intimidated,” Harper said during a nationally televised address late Wednesday, calling the shooting the second terrorist attack in three days.

The masked man was shot dead earlier Wednesday by a ceremonial sergeant-at-arms after running at Parliament. Another man ran over two Canadian soldiers Monday in Quebec, killing one and injuring the other.

Suspects in both incidents were reportedly recent converts to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Harper described them as terrorists.

“In the days to come, we will learn more about the terrorist and any accomplices he may have had,” he said about Wednesday’s gunman.

President Obama spoke with Harper by phone on Wednesday afternoon offering support, later saying, “We’re all shaken by it.”

Canada has supported U.S.-led airstrikes against ISIS and provided dozens of troops to serve in an advisory role in Iraq.

The latest attack “will lead us to strengthen our resolve and redouble our efforts to work with our allies around the world and fight against the terrorist organizations,” Harper said.
