Trump names acting FTC chairwoman
President Donald Trump officially named Maureen Ohlhausen acting chairwoman of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Wednesday.
“In pursuit of that mission, I will work to protect all consumers from fraud, deception, and unfair practices,” Ohlhausen said in a statement.
“I will safeguard competition while preserving American innovation and promoting economic liberty for all citizens. Finally, I will ensure the Commission minimizes the burdens on legitimate business as we carry out this vital work.”
{mosads}Ohlhausen, a Republican, was appointed to serve on the Commission by President Barack Obama in 2012; she previously worked in staff positions at the FTC.
Edith Ramirez announced earlier this month that she would step down as FTC chairwoman on Feb. 10.
When Ramirez leaves the FTC, it will have just two members — the Republican Ohlhausen and FTC Commissioner Terrell McSweeny.
The FTC can legally operate with such low numbers — however, many expect the commission to wait until Trump appoints more members before addressing contentious matters.
The agency has five commissioners when operating at full capacity. There can be no more than three members from the same party — just like at the Federal Communications Commission — and each serves a seven-year term.
It’s unclear whether Ohlhausen will be offered the chairmanship permanently.
