15 House incumbents out-raised by challengers

The Republicans were Reps. Brian Bilbray (Calif.), Dan Lungren (Calif.), Vern Buchanan (Fla.), David Rivera (Fla.), Bill Young (Fla.), Judy Biggert (Ill.), Bobby Schilling (Ill.), Joe Walsh (Ill.), Larry Bucshon (Ind.), Roscoe Bartlett (Md.), Charlie Bass (N.H.), Leonard Lance (N.J.) and Jon Runyan (N.J.).

The Democrats who were out-raised were Reps. Jerry McNerney (Calif.) and John Tierney (Mass.).

Many of these incumbents still hold a big cash edge despite their
relatively weak quarters — but being out-raised by a challenger isn’t a
good sign heading into a tough election year.

Bucshon, Bass, Lance, Lungren, Tierney and Walsh also trail their opponents in overall cash on hand. Democratic Reps. John Garamendi (Calif.) and Mark Critz (Pa.) and GOP Reps. Dan Benishek (Mich.) and Ann Marie Buerkle (N.Y.) likewise have less cash in the bank than their opponents — a more serious problem since that shows they’ve been regularly beaten on fundraising throughout the last year.

Buchanan is a self-funder who will be able to vastly outspend his opponent in the fall, and Bilbray’s opponent has almost no money left after a tough primary, though he’s a self-funder who will be able to replenish his coffers. Critz is playing catch-up after spending nearly all of his fundraising money to win his primary against fellow Rep. Jason Altmire (D-Pa.).

House fundraising reports were due to the Federal Election Commission on Sunday.
