Fire alarm at House page dorm
Authorities responded to a fire alarm at the House page residence hall Monday afternoon after signs of smoke were said to be coming from the building, according to U.S. Capitol Police.
{mosads}The dormitory was evacuated at 2:45 p.m. after what police believe to be an electrical shortage in the laundry room caused smoke in the building, located at 501 1st St. SE. No fire has been confirmed.
“It first came out as a call for fire,” said Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, spokeswoman for Capitol Police. “But upon arrival, there was no fire, just smoke.”
The building serves as housing for the high school students enrolled in the House’s page program and the overseeing faculty members.
A Capitol Police officer was treated for smoke inhalation and transported to George Washington Hospital. There were no other reported injuries.
Police have instructed occupants that it is safe to re-enter the building.
