Foursquare teams with inaugural committee to make Day of Service social
{mosads}According to PIC, it is the location-based social networking website’s first-ever badge for “volunteerism.”
The badge can be unlocked by checking in at volunteer events on Jan. 19, the National Day of Service. The inaugural committee hosts a list of events on their website. Events include the Service Summit taking place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
President Obama and the first lady are also expected to serve at an event on Jan. 19, as they have since 2009. The president and Michelle Obama have used social media to urge Americans to join them in volunteering, and the push in cooperation with Foursquare could bolster turnout by making it a social event. Foursquare users will be able to see that their friends are also participating that day.
“Along with the Presidential Inaugural Committee, we encourage all Americans to get out and serve in their own communities to celebrate the inauguration of President Obama and the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr,” said Foursquare CEO and Co-Founder Dennis Crowley in a press release.
