This week: House tees up debt-ceiling bill

{mosads}On the other side of the Capitol, the Senate is expected to start the week by approving the Marketplace Fairness Act, which would give states broad authority to collect sales from online retailers with a physical presence outside their borders.

The Senate is poised to clear the bill on Monday with broad support, but it faces an uncertain future in the House.

On Tuesday, the Senate Banking Committee will hold a hearing to consider Fred Hochberg’s re-nomination to lead the Export-Import Bank.

The conservative Club for Growth is pushing Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) to oppose the nomination, while a broad range of business groups are backing him for a second term.

On Wednesday, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee will take up the nomination of Thomas Perez to lead the Labor Department.

Panel Chairman Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) postponed the vote last month after Senate Republicans invited a whistle-blower involved with a Perez case to a hearing. Democrats are expected to advance Perez’s nomination, but he faces several roadblocks on the Senate floor.

The House Financial Services Committee has a full slate on Tuesday, as the panel will amend and vote on nine different bills that would tweak the derivatives portion of the Dodd-Frank financial reform law. Several versions of the bills cleared the committee in the last Congress, but financial reform advocates argue some of the measures defang the Wall Street overhaul. 

The Joint Economic Committee will wade into the immigration reform debate on Wednesday with a hearing to explore the impact of migration on the nation’s economy.

The House Ways and Means Committee has a trio of subcommittee hearings lined up for this week. Lawmakers will be exploring Medicare payments to physicians, tax compliance by colleges, and foster youth programs.

On Monday, the Joint Committee on Taxation will release a report summarizing the findings of 11 Ways and Means working groups exploring various aspects of comprehensive tax reform. The report will summarize existing tax law as it pertains to those groups, as well as the input they received from a slew of industries and advocates.

House appropriators have a number of hearings lined up next week. Lawmakers will discuss funding for the Securities and Exchange Commission with new Chairwoman Mary Jo White on Tuesday, and the budget for the Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday.

Senate appropriators also have a pair of hearings on tap, highlighted by a Thursday discussion of the Federal Housing Administration’s budget with Commissioner Carol Galante.
