GOP Rep. Harris wants people to ‘get over it’ on Zimmerman case verdict

Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.) wants people who are still focused on the acquittal of George Zimmerman, who was on trial for killing Florida teenager Trayvon Martin, to “get over it.”

{mosads}”I haven’t been watching day by day, but honestly you can’t turn on any news program now without 90 percent of it taken up by the Zimmerman case,” Harris said Tuesday in an interview with the WMAL Washington radio station. “Again, we miss the forest for the trees with all the huge issues going on in the world, with unrest in the Middle East, we’re hung up on this one case where this one fellow was found not guilty by a jury. That’s the way the American law system works. Get over it.”

Harris made the comments a few days after Zimmerman was acquitted of the second-degree murder and manslaughter charges filed against him for the death of Martin.

In response to the ruling, the Justice Department is considering whether to press federal civil rights charges against Zimmerman in relation to the case. Harris said the Justice Department would be acting on political motivations if it pressed civil rights charges against Zimmerman.

“I have to tell you, that would be purely political and we would have to look at ways to reign in the Justice Department,” Harris said. “Again, a lot of people feel the Justice Department is run amok. They are doing things they shouldn’t be doing and not doing things they should be doing. As someone has said, for them not to be prosecuting the Black Panthers in Philadelphia for their voting intimidation and now to consider going after a person who, under our system, has been found not guilty — it’s incredulous.”

On Monday, Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.) called on Congress to investigate Martin’s shooting.
